Ischia is a volcanic paradise in the Gulf of Naples, celebrated as the largest, greenest, and most naturally diverse island in the region. Often called L’Isola Verde (The Green Island) due to its lush pine and chestnut forests, it offers a beautifully laid-back, authentic Italian atmosphere that serves as a spacious, wellness-focused alternative to neighboring Capri.

The island is divided into six unique municipalities, each bringing its own distinct personality to your visit:

Ischia Porto & Ischia Ponte: The main gateway where ferries arrive. Porto is a bustling hub filled with seaside boutiques and lively restaurants. A short walk leads to Ponte, a historic, atmospheric fishing village dominated by the iconic Aragonese Castle.

Forio: Situated on the west coast, Forio is the island’s cultural and artistic heart. It boasts expansive sandy beaches (like Citara), spectacular golden sunsets, and the famous Giardini La Mortella—a breathtaking botanical garden created by composer William Walton.

Sant’Angelo: A picturesque, upscale fishing village on the southern tip. Completely pedestrianized, it features pastel-colored houses clinging to the cliffs, a narrow volcanic isthmus, and elegant open-air cafes looking out at the marina.

Lacco Ameno & Casamicciola Terme: Located along the northern coast, these towns are the historic heart of Ischia’s luxury thermal spa tourism. Lacco Ameno is instantly recognizable by Il Fungo, a unique mushroom-shaped volcanic rock rising out of the harbor.

Serrara Fontana: The highest, most rural municipality. It serves as the primary gateway for hiking up to the rocky summit of Monte Epomeo.

Fueled by the island’s volcanic activity, Ischia is world-renowned for its healing mineral waters and luxurious thermal parks.

Poseidon Thermal Gardens: Located in Forio, this is the island’s largest park, offering over 20 outdoor pools of varying temperatures nestled right against the beach.

Negombo: A lush, art-filled thermal park situated in the beautiful bay of San Montano, blending wellness pools seamlessly into tropical gardens.

Sorgeto Hot Springs: A natural phenomenon where scalding thermal water bubbles directly up through the rocks into the sea, creating free, open-air stone “hot tubs” right in the ocean.

Castello Aragonese: This magnificent 2,500-year-old fortress sits proudly on its own volcanic rock islet, connected to Ischia Ponte by a stone bridge. You can ride a lift dug directly into the rock to explore its ancient ruins, hidden paths, and panoramic terraces overlooking the sea.

Local Culinary Treats: Beyond fresh seafood, Ischia’s true signature dish is Coniglio all’Ischitana—a rich, savory rabbit stew slow-cooked in clay pots with garlic, white wine, and wild herbs. Pair it with a crisp glass of local Biancolella or Forastera white wine
