Monte Epomeo is the highest peak on the beautiful volcanic island of Ischia, rising 789 meters above sea level. Standing at the summit offers an unparalleled 360-degree panorama that spans across the entire island, the Gulf of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, Capri, and even the distant Pontine Islands on an exceptionally clear day.

Geologically, Epomeo is not actually a classic volcano cone. It is a vulcano-tectonic horst—a huge block of unique green tuff rock that was dramatically uplifted from the seafloor about 100,000 years ago following a massive underwater eruption. Key Highlights at the Summit

Eremo di San Nicola: A striking 15th-century hermitage and church carved directly out of the mountain’s green tuff rock. It represents a fascinating piece of historical rock-cut architecture where hermits once lived in complete isolation.

Summit Restaurant: Just below the highest point sits a rustic, traditional restaurant—also partly excavated out of the tuff rock—where you can enjoy local Ischian specialities and a glass of local wine while taking in the views.

How to Hike to the Peak – While there are long, challenging trails winding up from towns like Forio, Casamicciola, or Barano, the standard and most popular hiking route is quite manageable:
