The term Olmitello primarily refers to a historic natural thermal spring and its surrounding gorge (Cava di Olmitello) located just behind Maronti Beach(Spiaggia dei Maronti) on the southern coast of Ischia Island, Italy. It is also widely known for the family-run beachfront hotel that shares its name. The Olmitello Thermal Spring. The spring is nestled in a rocky canyon about 300 meters (a third of a mile) inland from the beach.
The Name: Derived from Greek words meaning “to round stones,” because its waters were historically celebrated for treating kidney stones and promoting urinary health.
History: Renowned since Roman times, its therapeutic benefits were documented in 1588 by physician Giulio Jasolino. Access was improved in the 18th century by Count Giorgio Corafà.
Properties: The water flows at around 38°C (100°F) and is traditionally used for digestive, skin, and joint ailments. Access to the spring remains open and free to the public year-round.
